Experts don’t just use AI — they shape how the organization uses it. You’re the person others come to when they want to know what’s possible.
4.1 Advanced Prompt Chains and Multi-Step Reasoning
Expert-level AI use involves orchestrating complex, multi-step interactions where each output feeds the next. This is where AI moves from assistant to collaborator.
Exercise 4.1: Multi-Step Analysis
Build a chain where each step depends on the previous:
Step 1 — Define the problem:
Prompt: "Act as an operations consultant. A mid-size organization
is seeing increasing customer response times (avg 35 min, up from
20 min over 12 months). Staff levels haven't changed. What are the
5 most likely root causes? Rank by probability."
Industry variant (healthcare): Reframe as “patient wait times in outpatient clinics” and include clinical staffing considerations.
Step 2 — Deep dive on the top cause:
Follow-up: "Take the #1 most likely cause and design a diagnostic
approach. What data would I collect? Who would I interview? What
would confirm or rule out this hypothesis?"
Step 3 — Design the intervention:
Follow-up: "Assuming that hypothesis is confirmed, design an
intervention plan. Include timeline, resources needed, expected
impact, and how to measure success. Format as a project brief I
could present to the COO."
Step 4 — Stress test:
Follow-up: "Now act as a skeptical COO. What are the 3 biggest
objections to this plan? For each objection, provide a response."
This is how AI becomes a thinking partner for complex problems — not just a drafting tool.
4.2 Evaluating and Adopting New AI Tools
The AI landscape changes rapidly. Experts need a framework for evaluating new tools quickly and determining organizational fit.
Exercise 4.2: Tool Evaluation Framework
Prompt: "Create an evaluation framework for assessing new AI tools
for use in an organization. The framework should cover:
- Capability assessment (what does it do well?)
- Compliance check (data handling, regulatory requirements, vendor agreements)
- Security review (where does data go? who has access?)
- Integration potential (does it fit existing workflows?)
- Cost-benefit analysis (ROI vs. free alternatives)
- Risk assessment (what could go wrong?)
Format as a scorecard template I can use to evaluate any new AI
tool in under 30 minutes."
Apply it: Use the framework to evaluate a tool you’ve heard about but haven’t tried. Share your evaluation with the team.
Industry variant (healthcare): Add healthcare-specific evaluation criteria — HIPAA BAA availability, PHI handling policies, integration with EHR systems, and clinical workflow compatibility.
4.3 AI Agent Design
AI agents are autonomous systems that perform tasks on a schedule or in response to triggers. At the expert level, you’re designing how agents serve the organization — not just using them yourself.
Exercise 4.3: Design an Organizational Agent
Prompt: "Design an AI agent for an organization that:
1. Monitors a shared feedback channel for staff AI questions
and pain points
2. Aggregates themes weekly
3. Suggests content updates to the AI training program based
on what staff are struggling with
4. Generates a weekly digest for program administrators
Describe the agent's:
- Inputs (what does it read?)
- Processing (what does it analyze?)
- Outputs (what does it produce?)
- Feedback loop (how does it improve over time?)
- Guardrails (what should it NOT do autonomously?)
Include a workflow diagram in text format."
This is directly applicable to how this framework maintains itself. Agents aren’t science fiction — they’re the next layer of AI integration.
Industry variant (healthcare): Design an agent that monitors clinical quality metrics and generates weekly improvement suggestions for department leads — flagging trends in patient satisfaction, wait times, or readmission rates using hypothetical data.
4.4 Mentoring and Knowledge Transfer
Expert fluency isn’t just personal — it’s organizational. The highest-value expert activity is raising the fluency of others.
Exercise 4.4: Create a Learning Resource
Choose a specific AI technique you’ve mastered (structured prompting, prompt chaining, workflow redesign, data analysis). Create a shareable resource:
Prompt: "Help me create a 1-page quick reference guide for
[technique]. The audience is professionals at the Capable level
who want to reach Proficient. Include:
- What it is (2 sentences)
- When to use it (3 scenarios)
- Step-by-step how-to (numbered list)
- Common mistakes to avoid
- One complete worked example relevant to [your industry]
Keep it to one page — scannable, not dense."
Share this with your team or the broader learning community. Every expert resource raises the organizational floor.
Industry variant (healthcare): Create the quick reference guide for a clinical workflow — e.g., using AI to prepare for patient case conferences or generate literature summaries for clinical questions.
4.5 The Innovation Challenge
This is the ultimate challenge. No template — just a goal:
Design an AI-first solution to a real problem in your organization.
Requirements:
- Identify a process, workflow, or problem that hasn’t been addressed with AI yet
- Design a solution using currently available AI tools
- Consider compliance, feasibility, and measurable impact
- Present it to your team for feedback
- Implement a pilot if feasible
This is where fluency becomes transformation. You’re not completing an exercise — you’re building something real.
Industry variant (healthcare): Apply this to a healthcare operations challenge — prior authorization automation, clinical documentation improvement, or patient communication optimization.
4.6 Checkpoint
At the Expert level, the checklist becomes a reflection:
- I can orchestrate multi-step AI interactions for complex problem-solving
- I have a framework for evaluating new AI tools
- I understand how AI agents work and can design them for organizational use
- I’ve created and shared learning resources for others
- I’ve proposed or implemented an AI-first solution to a real problem
